Coiled Tubing Umbilical
Coiled Tubing Umbilical
Coiled Tubing Umbilical is also simply called as “Coiled Tubing”. It is a continuous hollow metal pipe coiled up in a spool or reel. Coiled tubing umbilical is first uncurled and straighten up before it is pushed into the wellbore. This can be run inside and pulled out of the well including a well under pressure.
The system has its own power unit. Coiled tubing umbilical is useful in many ways during well operations such as it can run inside the tubing to circulate a light weight fluid before perforation, activate a well by pumping light weight fluid, provide a means of implementing temporary gas lift, helps in cleaning the tubing that is filled with sand, salt, paraffin, hydrates, spot acids or solvents, etc. Sometimes, in rare occasions, the coiled tubing umbilical is also used for drilling slim hole wells only especially in the reservoir section with an underbalanced system.
The length of coiled tubing umbilical ranges from 2000 ft to 15000 ft and is approximately 1 to 4 inches in diameter.
Some of the parts or components of Coiled Tubing Umbilical are:
- Custom or generic designed coil tubing gripper block
- Skate rollers and
- Arch rollers
