Composites are substances made from two or more materials, where the composite properties are superior to each of the component parts. Products that fall into this category include resins, fiberglass, fiber reinforced plastics, and concrete. High-performance composites use fiber reinforcing to strengthen materials like carbon and graphite.
Composite products are used in applications which require high strength but low weight. The biggest market for these materials is the automotive industry where car body parts must meet these dual criteria. Sports equipment like hockey sticks, bicycle components and helmets, and Kayaks are other examples of the specialized use of composite materials which can be shaped using waterjet cutting.
