The most common hose pressure tests done with a Resato test system

As a supplier of hose testing equipment it is essential to have extensive knowledge of the circumstances in which hoses are tested for designing suitable hose test systems. Hoses are crucial in a production and operational environment. Therefore, it is mandatory to test industrial hoses when they are new and, periodically, during their operation to safeguard the quality and safety standards.

To gain information about a hose’s condition and reliability, pressure tests are undertaken. There are many tests to perform, such as a proof pressure test, burst pressure test, hold test or a warp test. Each and every test provides valuable insight into its durability.

But which pressure tests are most commonly done with a Resato pressure test system in the Hose Industry? We have outlined the most common tests for you.

 

1)      Proof pressure hold test
With hydrostatic testing you fill up the hose with a medium, such as water, and take it to a pre-specified test pressure and hold it for a period of time. During this pressure phase the hose is monitored and inspected to make sure the hose can withstand the pressure.

Note: The test is not applicable to a curved or kinked hose.

 

2)      Measurement of deformation under pressure

 

1.       Volumetric expansion test
The Volumetric expansion (VE) test measures the volumetric expansion of the hose under ranges of internal pressure. Not all types of hoses are suitable for this test. It is only applicable to specific types of hose, such as a power steering hose or a hydraulic hose.
 

2.       Twisting (rotation) test
The rotation test, or the so-called twist test, measures the hose’s free-end rotation while under pressure. Two readings are usually taken, one reading at a pressure of 10 psi and a second reading at proof pressure. The difference in degrees between these two readings is called the ‘twist’.

 

3)      Burst pressure test

The burst pressure test is perhaps the most informative test in this list, because it shows you the exact pressure limit the hose can handle before it fails. The hose will be tested to the limit and beyond.
