Formation Isolation Valve
Formation Isolation Valve
Formation Isolation Valves or (FIVs) are the valves that provide bi-directional barriers to isolate the reservoir fluids of top zonal layer with the lower completion zones. Thus, these valves help the precious hydrocarbon fluids in the lower reservoir zones getting contaminated from productions and milling operations performed on upper reservoir zones by isolating both top and lower formations.
By performing these isolation operation, the valves help in enhancing the production rate from a one reservoir at a time, helps in optimizing completion operations and increases wellbore safety. Formation isolation valves are suitable for high pressure, high temperature (HPHT) environment.
Formation isolation valves have wide range of applications in addition to isolating the reservoir layers such as:
· It controls loss of fluid.
· Helps in performing underbalanced perforating operations.
· Helps in well control barrier operations.
· Help the lubrication fluids to reach the deep-set turbines
These valves operates on a principle of hydraulically or mechanically actuations from the control panel located at the surface of the wellhead platform.
